Before creating this podcast, I didn't know that I had such strong feelings about marketing. I thought that I just fumbled along, but that isn't true at all. Marketing is all about the customer, but I think it has to give back to the artist as well.
And this podcast is the perfect example! If I wasn't putting myself and my work out there, I wouldn't have been asked to do a podcast on marketing, and I wouldn't have thought about it. For me, marketing has to move my work forward. It needs to inspire me to think or create. If it doesn't, I don't keep up with it. A podcast or a blog isn't just a way to throw my work out into the world- it's a new way to see and think about the world. A way to connect, share and learn. That is the only way I know how to do it.
If you just want to market to make money, you probably should sell something else- not art. There are much easier ways to turn a profit. But to succeed in marketing art, you need to find a way that works for you. Make marketing part of the journey, and be patient. Sorry, no quick fixes here...but I think that that is just how I like it. :)
